Sand beds are common throughout the world are used to filter drinking water. The size of grains of sand and surface modifications determine the efficiency of sand in the removal of impurities from the water. Researchers at Rice University have created a little 'spinning nano-based magic "covered with sand", which has improved properties for cleaning. The breakthrough could benefit developing countries, where more than one billion people lack clean drinking water.
